Scholarships

The Saint Andrew's Society of Washington, DC, annually grants awards from its Washington Scots Charity & Education Fund Scholarships Program. Awards are made to scholars enrolled in US or Scottish institutions for the third or fourth year of College or University or full-time graduate study. There are generally three to five awards granted totaling in excess of $30,000. The size and total number of awards varies from year to year.

In honor of the 250th Anniversary of our St. Andrew's Society's 1760 founding, the Society has established The St. Andrew's Society Founders' Prize. Made possible by generous donations in the name of James & Mary Dawson and Donald Malcolm MacArthur, this Scholarship is an annual award in the amount of $7,500 made to an outstanding Scottish or Scottish-American scholar.

The Hughes Hallett Scholarship was established in 2019 with a generous gift to the Society’s Washington Scots Charity and Education Fund from distinguished academic and internationally respected Economic Advisor Dr. Andrew Hughes Hallett, FRSE. This Scholarship is an annual award in the amount of $10,000 supporting the research and studies of doctoral candidates in applied and/or quantitative economics.

The St. Andrew's Society of Washington, DC's Scholarships Program, funded by the Washington Scots Charity & Education Fund, is widely recognized among the preeminent Scottish-American scholarships programs in existence. The annual awarding of substantial grants to Scottish and American scholars in need of financial support is the Society's primary philanthropic pursuit, and the keystone of our efforts to meet the charitable and educational purposes of our ancient charter and to live into our motto "Relieve the Distressed."

Testimonials

Jack Knipe St. Andrews Scholar 2015, George Mason University PhD candidate in International Education and Linguistics

I wanted to thank you for giving me the opportunity to continue in my research this year.  Because of your scholarship, I was able to do my data collection in Scotland toward my dissertation.  Being immersed in my Scottish heritage while continuing my studies was an experience I will cherish forever.  I thank you again!

Jamie Hudson Society Founders' Scholar 2015, Universities of Edinburgh & Glasgow (joint degree) Masters candidate in Structural Engineering & Mechanics
I have just finished exams at the University of Edinburgh and though it would be a good time to update the Society on my experiences. My first semester went well. I have joined several societies, my favorite is the New Scotland Folk Dance Society. We learn traditional dances and also join in at the ceilidhs that are so much a part of Scottish social culture. This semester I completed a research paper on the Evolution of Tall Building Design. In springtime i am beginning my Master's thesis research. I have been able to coordinate with the architectural conservation department and will be studying the effects of differential settlement on vaults in Gothic churches, specifically those in Scotland. I hope to then continue this research through a PhD degree here at Edinburgh.
Dr. Cassie Smith-Christmas St. Andrews and Founders' Scholar 2008-2011, Research Fellow, Lews Castle College University of the Highlands & Islands

I hope this note finds you well.  I just wanted to let the St. Andrew's Society know about the publication of my book Family Language Policy: Maintaining an Endangered Language in the Home.  This book stems in large part from my PhD research at the University of Glasgow, which of course was supported by St. Andrew's Society grants; so I wanted to let the members know about it and thank them for their support over the years. Please pass on my good wishes to all the St. Andrew's Society members! Le gach deagh dhurachd!
